Life can become very hectic at times, with us rushing from one task to another in order to complete our responsibilities. It's a common occurrence, right? However, there are days when we interact with numerous people even before noon - from conversing with partners, dropping off the kids at school, to engaging with colleagues. By the time lunchtime arrives, the positive pants might start to be wearing off. The optimistic attitude we started the day with, ready to take on the world, may be fading away (if it hasn't already), and negative thoughts may start creeping in. This could be triggered by a frustrating comment from someone or the feeling of being overwhelmed by an ever-expanding to-do list that never seems to shorten.
This is the moment to take a pause and check in with yourself today, ask yourself:
Where am I at?
How am I feeling in my body?
Is there any tension? If so, where is it? How does it feel? What feeling is associated with it?
What thoughts keep cropping up?
What is my inner dialog saying?
Are these my thoughts or are they someone else's?
Who's shit is this? Is this mine? Or is it someone else's?
By asking these straightforward questions and giving ourselves a moment to pause, we can remain present and focused. This practice enables us to differentiate between our own issues and those that others may be imposing on us. It allows us to ponder and recognize when something doesn't belong to us, giving us the freedom to let go of unwanted burdens that others may have placed upon us, whether intentionally or unintentionally.
Let me clarify, sorting through difficult situations can be challenging and confusing, especially at first. However, taking the time to understand yourself, your thoughts, your current situation, and what you are feeding your mind and body with can greatly benefit you in the long run. Practice checking in with yourself at least once a day and see what you notice
